BEACH VOLLEYBALL

 

a. History

 

In 1920, in Santa Monica created a area for public that enjoy beach volley. The first interclub competitions was started in 1924.

These beach volleyball matches were played with teams of at least six players for team, like indoor volleyball. Now a days beach volleyball it's played for two person in each team. In the summer of 1930, Johnson decided try playing only with two people in one team. The game was forever changed.

Beach volley appear in Europe in the 1930’s.

 

b. Equipment

 

If you play beach volley you need:

shorts or a piece swimsuit. The swimsuit is like a bikini.

Most players prefer wear two-piece bikini beacuse it's more confortable and you sweat less.

 

 

c. Favourite player

 

Kerri Lee Walsh  (born August 15, 1978) is an American was professional beach volleyball player.

Walsh was the gold medalists in beach volleyball at the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics. They have been called "the greatest beach volleyball team of all time."

Kerri Lee Walsh was born in Santa Clara, California.

d. Sport-related language: beach volleyball glossary 

 

A

Antenna (antena): Vertical rods (normally white and red) mounted near the edges of the net. The antennas are considered part of the sidelines and are not-in-play.

Attack (atac): An attempt to terminate the play by hitting the ball to the floor on the opponent's side.

 

B

Block (bloqueig): Awarded when a player stops the opponent’s attack by deflecting the ball back into the opponent's court to end a rally.

 

 

 

E

Endline (linea de fons): The boundary line that marks the back of the volleyball court.

 

 

H

Hit (toc): To jump and strike the ball with a forceful over-handed shot.

 

J

Jump Serve (saque per dalt): serve started when the server tosses the ball into the air, then jumps and hits the ball during its downward motion.

 

K

Kill: An attack that terminates a rally and results in an immediate point or sideout.

 

L

Lift : When the ball is held and raised up rather than hit. Also called a “carry.”

 

M

Mintonette: The original name of the game of volleyball created by William Morgan.

 

O

Overhand Pass (toc de dits): A pass executed from just above the forehead with both hands open and controlled by the fingers and thumbs.

 

R

Ready Position (posició inicial): The flexed, yet comfortable, posture a player assumes before moving to contact the ball.

 

S

Serve (servei): One of the six basic skills and used to put the ball into play at the beginning of each point. It is the only skill controlled exclusively by one player.

Server (servidor): The player who puts the ball into play at the beginning of each point.

 

U

Under Hand Serve (saque per abaix): A serve where the ball is given a slight under-hand toss from about waist high and then struck with the opposite closed fist in an "underhand pitching" motion.

 

e. My hobby & I:

 

I began to practice volley because Mireia suggested that we could be the first Sant Gregori's school volley team.

 

This has been my first indoor volley year and this summer I will start practising beach volley.

 

I love this sport because:

 

a. It is a team sport

b. It is played at the seaside

c. It is very similar to indoor volley ( the sport that I usually practice during the year)

d. It is a sport which needs concentration

e. When practising this sport you gain strength

f. I practice volley with my friends
